GE Dehumidifier Failed after 9 months of service

Submitted by Dgdoc - 8/30/2020

Mine stopped working after 18 months. I used it for only 9 months. I purchased a ADEL70W from Home Depot about 20 months ago and have used it for approximately 9 months. Recently, it stopped dehumidifying and I could hear what sounded like ice forming and cracking from the unit. This is a telltale sign that the unit has lost refrigerant. Since GE does not honor this product from more than 12 months, i decided to take it apart to see if it was indeed freezing up. I found the evaporator had leaked out the refrigerant (R-410a). I've attached a picture highlighting the leaks. (The foaming areas are where it's leaking). GE needs to do something about this and extend the warranties of everyone that has had this kind of failure. 2 years would be reasonable for this kind of failure. Until GE makes this right, I would avoid purchasing a dehumidifier from GE.

Works as Advertised

Submitted by PaulBo - 8/26/2020

Great dehumidifier! Proved its worth the moment I plugged it in. It has been running nonstop for about a month and has kept my basement at 40-45% humidity - just where I want it to be. I would have no hesitation recommending this dehumidifier to anyone and everyone. Thank you GE!

Works as promised

Submitted by fikra - 8/20/2020

Bought to replace DeLonghi that stopped pulling water after 3-4 years. Appears to be a consistent theme no matter the brand. Bought extended warranty for 45 from HD. Anyway - basement doors gone in one day. Humidity level now at 50 percent. Drain pump routed full length to washing machine drain - all good so far. One point though -- The unit does not immediately shut down when the bucket is removed as described in the instruction manual. When removed the compressor shuts down and the fan will continue for 3 minutes or so. Appears to normal operating procedure. Found issue in a 2013 post re a Kenmore. Finally someone pointed this out and it applies here too. After 7 years you'd think they would revise instructions (kenmore, GE I believe made by same company). Anyway pump works and that's critical for me. I recommend the product.

Love the pump

Submitted by Cheman - 8/12/2020

I have had variable experiences with dehumidifiers. I have 2 in my finished basement. Most only seem to last 2-3 years. Since I don't have a floor drain available I have hung the units from the ceiling and they drain, by gravity, to my septic system. Inconvenient, but workable. Adding the condensate pump to the package has made the installation and management of the unit much easier. I only hope that it lasts longer than has been my experience with other dehumidifiers. Fingers crossed.

Not working correctly

Submitted by Mal W S - 7/30/2020

I discovered yesterday that I cannot change any of the settings. The only one that works is the on/off. I tried unplugging the unit for 24 hours hoping it would reset, but nothing changed. It is not running. We in the greater Boston area are i the midst of a week long hot and humid weather pattern. I was going to look for a customer service number in the manual when I received this email.

Meets my needs

Submitted by Brian50 - 7/22/2020

This unit has worked well so far and has met my needs. The functionality and controls were most important to me. This is my second GE dehumidifier and replaced one that I left to the new homeowners. Reached to them and it's still working after 10 years

Operating Manual is worthless

Submitted by SLCinBuff - 7/18/2020

Despite the poor reviews, I purchased the unit. It is a workhorse so far and my basement has never smelled better due to this machine, HOWEVER... I cannot figure out how to attach the garden hose. The thread receptacle is a mystery as to what size hose it takes, and even when I can rig a hose to attach, the bucket still fills and the machine turns off. Other than pointing me to the worthless manual that has one vague sentence about the hose attachment - does anyone know the solution?

Initially worked great, but broke within 2 years.

Submitted by Nimesh - 7/15/2020

It seemed like a great unit - worked very well - particularly liked the pump feature. But I have to give a poor overall rating since it has stopped dehumidifying. We cleaned the filters- that was not the issue. Only the fan works - humidity remains unchanged. Unit seems unserviceable - what a waste. We have a frigidaire dehumidifer that lacks the pump feature, but it is working well since more than 5 years now.

No more damp basement

Submitted by Sjenson - 7/9/2020

Our basement was so humid I didn't like going down there.  We set up this dehumidifier and ran the hose to the drain and it brought the humidity down 15% in less than 12 hours. That makes an amazing difference.  It was easy to set up with the pump so I never have to empty the bucket again.  Wish I had bought this years ago.

Didn't even work for one year

Submitted by Diensy - 5/25/2020

This dehumidifier didn't even make it one year in our basement laundry room area. It remains plugged in but never runs even when switched to "run constantly". I have no idea exactly when it died since we use it on the pump but VERY poor quality for the money.
